A native plant of Africa, and known to be used by the Khoikhoi tribes of South Africa in their traditional medicine, Leonotis has been used to cure dysentery (taken orally) colds and coughs (as an enema), used as a purgative, a treatment for influenza, tuberculosis, jaundice, bee and scorpion stings, it is even reported that the leaves and roots were pounded and added to drinking water to prevent poultry sickness. It goes by several names; Devils Tobacco, Wild Dagga, Cape Hemp, but it is most commonly known as Lions Ear due to the flowers it produces. The plant itself can grow to 1.5 meters and belongs to the Lamiaceae (mint) family. It contains nicotine so can be addictive if used regularly. Smoking the leaves is not known to be a particularly pleasant experience as the smoke is unpleasant and harsh, people much prefer the flowers as they are quite pleasant, either on their own or mixed with the leaves. The leaves are best prepared as a tea (you can do the same with the flowers). The tea is said to induce deep sleep with amazing dreams or in smaller doses has a very calming effect generally.
