Blue Lily Petals

When a plant continually appears in ancient Egyptian and Mayan art depicting rebirth, sexuality and psychoactive properties you have to stand up and take notice.

Blue Lily (often confused with Blue Lotus) was first recorded in East Africa. Used by the ancient Egyptians in burial ceremonies it was thought that it would aid the deceased to enter the after world reborn beautiful. It was also used to symbolize the union of Upper and Lower Egypt.

On the other hand the Mayans depicted the Blue Lily along with hallucinogenic toad which is thought to show that the Blue Lily had euphoric properties.

The psychoactive properties of Blue Lily petal are thought to be due to Aporphine, Nuciferine, and Apomorphine contained in the plant. It is interesting to note that Aporphine, Nuciferine are also present in Blue Lotus which may also lead to the confusion between the two.

As well as its psychoactive properties Blue Lily petals were thought to be used for treating pain and increasing memory by the ancient Egyptians.

Eating Blue Lily petals is thought to be mildly sedating, but most people either brew a tea or infuse with wine. For tea boil 5grammes for 10-20 minutes, to infuse in wine the petals should be left in the wine for around 3 weeks then strained out before drinking the wine.

Try a little Egyptian euphoria!
